X+ (La Morte D’Arthur) = Fall 2006

School started this week and thus far I can tell it’s going to be yet another hectic semester.

My Medieval Lit class, which meets on Mondays and Wednesdays, is going to be interesting. The professor seems like a cool guy. He used to write movie reviews for our local, alternative newspaper so he can’t be all bad in my eyes. He also has the life that I sometimes wish I’d pursued. He’s an editor for a yearly journal that hosts a huge conference on Geoffrey Chaucer, author of “The Canterbury Tales”. He writes articles for magazines, small pieces for scholarly books, and he’s finding new ways to help teach us about this era in history, such as showing us clips from documentaries and movies (like “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”) to illustrate the various, often conflicting viewpoints on what the Medieval period was really like. Basically he lives the dream – doing something he’s passionate about. Gotta love it.

Math is…well, math. We’re just getting into the first lesson on number sets (i.e., {1,2,3…10}) Yeah, I barely remembered it, either. However, it’s not too terribly difficult just yet. I can only hope that it stays that way. It’d be so nice to get an easy A or B and not have to worry about taking any more math.

And even from these first two days, I can tell already that this semester is going to be exhausting. Every day I’ll leave work at 4:30, drive through traffic to get to UMSL at 5:15 (if traffic is light), head directly to a class that starts at 5:30 and lasts until 6:45. Then I’ll drive back to O’Fallon (actually passing my home exit on the highway) and go to the gym. I’ll finally make it home around 8:30. That still gives me, the night owl, about 4+ hours to do whatever I need to for the night, but, still, that’s a rough day. Throw in any random trips I’ll need to make to the fire department for GIS work and there are going to be some long nights ahead. And of course none of this is even counting any wedding planning that will need to be done in the “down time”.

But, unlike last semester, I kind of feel like this is going to be worth it now. Maybe it’s the light at the end of the tunnel. Maybe it’s just that I’m back into literature classes again where I’m more comfortable. Whatever the reason, I this is going to be a pretty good Fall.
