Slaughterhouse-Five: First Post

I’m about halfway through my next 100 Novels Project book, Kurt Vonnegut’s classic, Slaughterhouse-Five.

I’ve read this one before; the last time about 4 years ago. It’s not an easy book for some people because of the structure. I mean, you have a guy who is “unstuck in time”, so the narrative jumps all over the place – in World War II for one page, 1960s America the next, and some imaginary planet (presumably) called Tralfamadore on the following page. There are also quite a few heady concepts like the notion that time is not a series of cascading events, but actually occurs all at once, making the ideas of birth and death meaningless.

I have to admit this is probably another of those books that I’m not going to write about much. I mean, let’s face it, I’m not going to say anything that so many college students before me have not already regurgitated so they can muster a B- in English 101. So I will update again when I’m finished, but there won’t be any huge, in-depth research or analysis going on here. If you would like a more thorough examination, I suggest you check out the Wikipedia entry or SparkNotes.

Look for an update when I’m done.

It’s Been Too Long…

Wow, sorry it’s been so long since I posted. Not that anyone’s reading this anyway.

However, I should post a few things. So for the two people who accidentally come to this site while searching for either “Alvin and the Chipmunks” or “Annette Bening”, here’s an update on my life.

I had another mental_floss story published since I last wrote. Worth More Dead Than Alive: 5 Famous Grave Robberies was posted last week and, despite getting some hits, was not a huge success. I got up to about 150 votes on Digg.com, but very few comments on mental_floss. Not a dud, per se, but no a huge hit, either. Probably more of what I should be used to, rather than expecting every story to set the blogosphere on fire.

However, speaking of mental_floss, this week I was tapped to write a story for the print magazine. Yes, this is a first for me. And, yes, I’m pretty excited about it. The editor emailed me on Monday and asked if I could pound out a 600 word article by Friday since they got in a bit of a bind. It was based on an idea I secretly submitted via my web editor about a month ago, so I already had quite a bit of the research ready to go. But, me being me, I couldn’t leave it at that, so wound up spending a few nights digging up more tidbits of trivia to round out the list. It was a really great experience and will hopefully lead to more work with the magazine.

There’s more to tell about my burgeoning writing career, but I need to keep things under wraps until things have solidified a little bit more. Just know that there will be more to come if everything plays out like I hope it does.

Anyway, I have to start research on my next mental_floss article tonight, so I’d better get going for now.

Thanks again to all my supporters! Love you guys!
