Lately I’ve been trying to come up with a way to start using this website again. Thanks to social media like Twitter and Google+, I don’t really need to blog here as much as I once did. However, this website has been around for far too long to just let it die. I mean, it’s 10 years old this year! How many people can say they’ve kept their website going for 10 years? That alone is worth holding onto. But I also feel like the posts I’ve been doing for the last couple of years – “Here are my latest mental_floss articles. Oh, and I made it on CNN again!” – are nothing that’s really worth making an effort for you to read or for me to write (obviously, since I haven’t written any this year). So, I needed a new idea to not only make people want to stop by, but to also make me want to keep coming back to keep this train rolling.
The idea I came up with is to post “the deleted scenes” of some of my mental_floss articles; what I like to call “flossy_cuts”. See, when I’m writing a story, I have to cut things due to word count, or, more often than I like, I find a better story and decide to write that one instead and cut something I’ve already written. So what I thought I’d do is link you to the original story and then post here the snippets that got cut, just to give you a little more insight into the process, as well as bonus information on the topic at hand. I’m hoping that, by doing this, I might get some positive feedback and maybe it will make me want to start expanding my website offerings again. Maybe I’ll do some more reviews here. Maybe I’ll start blogging again. Maybe I’ll bring back Band Names! or even the Movie Journal. Or maybe I’ll do a handful of these, no one will ever read them, and I’ll quickly lose interest. It’s hard to say, but it’s worth trying.
After all, after 10 years, it would be a shame to see an…an institution like SpaceMonkeyX.com fade away. Right? Right. Enjoy!
